As a globally recognized tournament by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, this competition offers amateur golfers an opportunity to earn international rankings, making it a significant milestone for many participants.

The prestigious Ikoyi Club Ladies Open has returned for its 49th edition, kicking off today and running until November 15, 2024, at the scenic Ikoyi Golf Club in Lagos. This year’s event, themed “A Taste of Nigeria,” promises not just to highlight the beauty of golf but to showcase the rich cultural tapestry of the Nigerian nation. From music and art to fashion and culinary delights, participants will be immersed in the essence of Nigeria while celebrating the sport.

A Platform for Women, Progress, and Culture

Ronke Iyiola, Co-Chairperson of the event, shared her excitement about the vision behind this year’s tournament. She emphasized that “A Taste of Nigeria”is not only about celebrating golf but also about creating a vibrant platform to showcase the skills of talented female golfers and the cultural richness of the nation.

“This year marks a historic milestone, as we welcome 17 professional female golfers from Nigeria and around the globe, including the United States, Milan, Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya,” Iyiola announced. “We hope this exposure will attract sponsorship opportunities for these professionals, enabling them to compete at higher levels, just like their male counterparts.”

The event also features 120 amateur female golfers and 100 male guest golfers, bringing the total to 237 participants.

Supporting the Unsung Heroes: Caddies
In a heartfelt initiative, the Ikoyi Club Ladies Open has introduced a charity program dedicated to the caddies who support the game behind the scenes. Earlier this year, 50 caddies qualified for a special tournament held as part of the pre-event activities on November 11.
“We’ve committed 10% of all sponsorship proceeds to our caddies’ program,” Iyiola shared. “This initiative allows them to apply for scholarships, which can benefit either themselves or their children. It’s our way of giving back to the backbone of our sport.”

Exciting Prizes Await the Champions
Lady Captain Fatumata Soukouna Coker revealed an impressive lineup of prizes for the top winners this year. The grand prize is a premium round-trip ticket to the United States of America, courtesy of Delta Airlines. The second-place winner will enjoy a golf-inclusive trip to Marrakech, while the third-place winner receives a luxurious getaway to Lakowe, complete with a golf experience for two.

Beyond Golf: A Celebration of Nigerian Heritage
Mrs. Nkoli Moka, the event’s second Co-Chairperson, offered a glimpse into the vibrant activities planned for the three-day celebration. “Participants will get to experience Nigerian culture in all its glory—through live music, breathtaking fashion, captivating art, and delicious food,” she shared. “A marketplace will feature fabrics and crafts from across the nation, offering everyone a chance to take home a piece of Nigeria.”

An Inspiring Event for All
The 49th Ikoyi Club Ladies Open is more than just a golf tournament; it’s a celebration of talent, culture, and community. From showcasing the skills of professional and amateur golfers to empowering caddies and promoting Nigerian artistry, the event is set to leave a lasting impression on all who attend.
This year’s edition not only elevates the game of golf but also reminds us of the power of sports to unite, inspire, and give back.
