LAGOS COUNTRY CLUB MEMBERS PLAN EGM TO RESOLVE LINGERING LEADERSHIP CRISIS

As the leadership crisis of Lagos Country Club tears the seams of the once peaceful club, some concerned members have initiated moves to hold an Extraordinary Ordinary Meeting (EGM) for tomorrow Thursday. The EGM Notice listed 7 motions/prayers expected to be passed at the meeting.

Following a flurry of litigations, there have been several efforts aimed at resolving the imbroglio including intervention by club elders and some traditional rulers. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had adjourned hearing of the suit on the leadership dispute, engendered by disagreement between the camps of the club President and Secretary General, to June 2, 2024. The suit was filed by the Management Council of the club against the Registered Trustees over their plan to inaugurate an Interim Management Committee to replace the council.

Smarting from previous disruptions of club activities through invitation of police to the club premises, the conveners have just obtained a court injunction restraining any party from disrupting the EGM.

The Notice signed by Saka-Bello Adeshina Lukman (Convener/Proposer) and Francis Ofordu (Co-Convener/Seconder) states: “Upon requisition by Members calling for this Extraordinary General Meeting pursuant to S.12(b) of the Constitution of the Lagos Country Club 2013 (as amended) and with the sole purpose and intent to intervene in the crisis, the following Motions/Prayers shall be sought to be passed in the meeting.”

The motions are:

  1. The Trustees of the Lagos Country Club have no power under the constitution of the Lagos Country Club to suspend the Management Council of the Lagos Country Club who were duly elected into office by the Members of the Club
  2. The Trustees have no power under the Constitution of the Club to suspend the Management Council of the Lagos Country Club and inaugurate as a replacement an Interim Management Board to carry out the duties and functions of the Management Council as provided by the Constitution of the Lagos Country Club.
  3. The Trustees have no power to suspend the Management Council of the Lagos Country Club and inaugurate as a replacement an Interim Management Board to carry out the duties and functions of the Management Council as provided by the Constitution of the Lagos Country Club without the consent, approval and ratification of the Members of the Club at a duly called General Meeting for same purpose.
  4. The constitution and inauguration of the Interim Management Board amounts to an imposition on the Members and the Club contrary to the provisions of the Constitution relating to constitution of the body responsible for the day to day management of the Club and is therefore unconstitutional, illegal null and void.
  5. A vote of No Confidence be passed on the Interim Management Board and dissolved with immediate effect.
  6. A Vote of Confidence be passed on the Management Council and all the Officers therein without exception.
  7. All Petitions and litigation actions do not have the support of the Members of the Club and are to be withdrawn forthwith without delay.

Billed for the Jubilee Hall of the Club at 6pm, the EGM has the following as agenda:

  1. Appointment of Chairman and Secretary.
  2. Confirmation of 75% Signatories Attendance.
    3.Reading of the EGM Notice and Agenda.
  3. Adoption of the EGM Agenda for the Records.
    5.Opening Remarks by the Chairman.
    6.Reading of the Requisition and Prayers by the Convener/Proposer and Co-Convener/Seconder.
  4. Adoption of the Requisition and Prayers for Discussion and Resolution.
    8.Motions/Prayers.
    9.Announcement of Results.
  5. Closing Remarks by the Chairman.

In the interim injunction granted by the Hon Justice A. O. Awogboro yesterday, the Federal High Court states:

  1. An order of interim Injunction is hereby granted by this Honourable Court restraining the Respondents herein either by themselves, their officers, agents and privies from disturbing, interfering and blocking the Meetings and Gathering of Members of Lagos Country Club at No. 2, Joel Ogunnaike Street, off Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way,G. R. A., Ikeja, Lagos State particularly the proposed ExtraOrdinary General Meeting scheduled to hold on the 28th March 2024 pending the hearing and final determination of the Application on Notice for Enforcement of the Applicants’Fundamental Human Rights.”
