As the Special Guest of Honour at the finals of the tournament’s opening week, the royal father commended the unwavering dedication of the organizers and the Lagos Polo Club in promoting the noble game of polo. He acknowledged the club’s century-long contributions to the sport, emphasizing its role in fostering tourism and positively engaging the youth.
Speaking through one of his chiefs, His Majesty noted that the Lagos Polo Club’s steadfast commitment to polo has significantly boosted tourism in Nigeria, across Africa, and globally. He reiterated that the club’s efforts have played a crucial role in redirecting the energy of young people toward productive and positive activities.
The Lagos International Polo Tournament, recognized as one of Africa’s oldest and most prestigious polo competitions, has continuously produced promising young talents. Among the standout players in recent years are Yasin Amusan, who was named the Most Valuable Player, along with emerging stars such as Timi Badiru, Tomi Ojora, and members of the renowned Dantata polo family.
His Majesty, along with his royal entourage, witnessed an electrifying final match in which Lagos STL triumphed over their fierce rivals, Lagos Shoreline A1, to claim the coveted Oba of Lagos Cup.
The first week of the 2025 NPA/GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament concluded with Lagos STL and Kaduna Clearwater Farm emerging as the top winners. Lagos STL secured the prestigious Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup after a hard-fought victory over Clearwater in an intense final at the historic Ribadu Road Polo Ground in Ikoyi.
Earlier, the Seyi Tinubu Boys had delivered a dominant performance, defeating city rivals Lagos A1-Shoreline 13-7 to claim the Oba of Lagos Cup, signaling their strong intent to dominate this year’s tournament.
As the tournament progresses, the competition intensifies with three Lagos-based teams and Abuja’s Rubicon Polo Club battling for the tournament’s grand prize, the Majekodunmi Cup.
The third and final week of the high-profile polo festival, which kicked off on February 4, 2025, at the Ribadu Road Polo Ground, will see teams vying for the Low Cup and Silver Cup, marking the thrilling conclusion of this year’s event.
