n a significant boost to the Nigerian golfing community, former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida has endorsed the IBB International Golf and Country Club’s initiative to launch the annual IBB International Golf Classic. This endorsement was made during a meeting held over the weekend at Babangida’s residence in Minna, Niger State, where he received the executive committee members of the club, led by its Captain, Ibrahim Babayo.
General Babangida, who is the life patron of the club, expressed his enthusiasm for the new tournament, recognizing its potential to enhance Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage. He commended the club’s ongoing efforts to add value to the country through such initiatives. “I believe that an international tournament like this will further put our country on the world map in a positive light,” he remarked.
Ibrahim Babayo briefed the former president on the committee’s efforts to include the ‘IBB International Golf Classic Competition’ in the club’s calendar. He emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “We have come to our father, the father of the Club, and the life patron of IBB International Golf and Country Club, to inform him about the annual IBB Classic that will be held every August. This event will be a Pro-Am of international status.”
Babayo highlighted the goals of the tournament, noting that it aims to showcase the beauty of their golf course and attract professional golfers from around the world to Nigeria. “Golf is a significant earner, and many countries use it as part of their foreign policy,” he added, underlining the economic and diplomatic benefits of hosting such an event.
As a gesture of appreciation for his unwavering support and contributions to the club, General Babangida was presented with a club souvenir. The IBB International Golf and Country Club, founded and named after him in 1991, has continually aimed to promote golf and its associated benefits in Nigeria.
The visit included key members of the club’s executive committee, the Club’s Resident Pro, and the club manager. They collectively expressed their gratitude to General Babangida and looked forward to his continued support as they prepare for the inaugural IBB International Golf Classic.
