In a decisive move to address ongoing safety risks, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has closed the Ikeja Golf Club, located at Oba Akinjobi Way, GRA. The action, taken by LASBCA on Wednesday, comes amid repeated complaints and incidents pointing to the club’s alleged negligence and disregard for public safety.
Adu Ademuyiwa, Director of Public Affairs for LASBCA, confirmed that the closure followed numerous reports from the public highlighting safety lapses at the club. He explained that a recent incident, in which a golf ball from the club’s course struck an LASBCA employee at the agency’s nearby Ikeja headquarters, underscored the urgent need for action. This incident was reportedly not isolated, as LASBCA had also received multiple complaints about stray golf balls damaging vehicles in the surrounding area.
According to Ademuyiwa, despite repeated warnings, Ikeja Golf Club’s management has allegedly failed to implement preventive safety measures, such as installing protective netting or altering the layout of play areas to reduce risks to the public.
Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LASBCA, criticized the club’s management for what he described as an “unacceptable” disregard for safety regulations. “It is concerning to witness such negligence from a reputable establishment. Persistent disregard for safety regulations is unacceptable, particularly when it puts lives and property at risk,” Oki stated.
Oki emphasized that until the club installs proper safety measures to mitigate the risk of stray golf balls, the closure will remain in effect. He reiterated LASBCA’s commitment to upholding safety for all Lagos residents and visitors, stressing that preventable hazards cannot be overlooked.
The agency is calling on all establishments in the state, particularly those located near public or residential areas, to prioritize safety compliance. Ikeja Golf Club will remain sealed until it addresses the identified risks, ensuring the safety of those who frequent the area.
