The Lagos Polo Club was established in 1904. It was introduced by British Naval Officers and was played on an airstrip that was shared between the Lagos Polo Club and the Ikoyi Club. It was most probably made up of a playing field and temporary movable tents and the horses were most probably stabled in the barracks.

In 1914, Kaiser Wilhelm II, King of Germany presented a sterling silver Cup (now known as the Independence Cup) for a championship between Nigeria and the German Cameroon’s.
The Lagos Polo Club developed rapidly over the next 30 years in line with the city of Lagos. The members and players who were mostly British naval officers, changed to expatriates and Nigerian civil servants and senior citizens.

The club was basically made up of the playing field, the club house and temporary stables. Other cups were played for alongside the Kaiser Wilhelm Cup, until the year 1962 when Dr. Majekodunmi a member since 1949, donated the now famous Majekodunmi Cup to be competed for by the highest handicap players at club tournaments. Then in 1949 December 20th saw the club complete its first major redevelopment with the opening of the new club house, which was commemorated by then President of Nigeria Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. This major refurbishment saw the Lagos Polo Club become one of the premier clubs in Nigeria.

The seat of power had moved to Dodan Barracks with the charismatic Head of State General Yakubu Gowon spending his spare time on the field playing polo and in the club house. This attracted the who is who in Lagos and Nigeria converging on the club.

Lagos Polo Club has attracted world personalities including HRH Prince Charles, Alphonso Pieres, Gonzalo Pieres, Alan Kent and The Hipwood brothers Alan and Julian.

The land for the Golf Course was acquired in 1928 for a term of thirty years. At the end of the lease term, the right of re-entry was exercised in 1959 by the Government of Eastern Nigeria which wanted to convert the “waste land” used for Golf Course into a residential Layout. The then Mayor of Port Harcourt, Honourable Justice Ambrose Allagoa, prevailed on the Eastern Nigeria Ministry of Lands and Town Planning and the bulk of the land was left for sporting while  fringes of the course were used for housing.

On October 11 1959, Honourable Justice Ambrose Allagoa took a drive off the first Hole (Hole13 Doc Elberts) to mark the opening of the first hole of the Golf Section of the Port Harcourt Club. The Golf ball used in that tee off, a Dunlop 65/7 is preserved as a historical item.

The present Main Club Building served as the “nineteenth hole” for golfers. The number one tee box was Hole 7 before 1959.

In 1971, the club named “Allagoa Hole” after the man who helped save the course, (Honourable Justice Ambrose Allagoa) in appreciation. The present Golf Section Club house was rebuilt in 1971.

Founded in 1775, the Royal Thames Yacht Club (RTYC) is the oldest continuously operating yacht club in the world. It provides its members with outstanding sailing and social opportunities. The Clubhouse in Knightsbridge is also the ideal venue for events and functions.

At its founding in 1959, early members of the Metropolitan Club were also members of some existing Clubs such as the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, The Ikoyi Club 1938 and the Yoruba Tennis Club.

The founding fathers were gentlemen some of whom had spent their formative years in the United Kingdom and had attended very good public schools and higher institutions, with apparent exposure to the British culture. This common interest brought together the elite Gentlemen to form what is known as The Metropolitan Club. The Chief Promoter of this initiative was the late Sir Adetokunbo Ademola who ensured that his colleagues and friends both Black and White were founders of the Club.Some of them were Late Dr. (Chief) M. Koye Majekodunmi CON, CFR; Late Sir Leonard Daldry; Late Mr. Rotimi Williams, SAN QC; Late Chief H. O. Davies QC; Late Sir Kofo Abayomi; Late Dr. O. B. Alakija; Late Chief Joe Harold; Late Sir S.L.A Manuwa; Late Dr. C. Dupe Norman Williams; Late Hon. Justice Atanda Fatayi-Williams; Late Sir. Mobolaji Bank-Anthony; Late Chief S.L. Edu; Late Chief A. G. Leventis; Late Mr. Mandilas; Late Justice G. B. A. Coker; Late Sir Louis Mbanefo; Mr. Akintola Williams, OFR CFR CBE; Late Hon. Justice Charles Daddy Onyama; Late Chief Okwosa; Late Mr. E.C. When the number of its members increased shortly after its founding, the club’s premises at Igbosere Road in Lagos became too small to accommodate them. With the assistance of the late Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa who was the club’s first Patron, a new parcel of land on Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island was allotted.

Yoruba Tennis Club started out in 1926 with the name Orelodun Tennis Club75, at Tokunboh Street, Lagos. It was born out of the discriminatory tendencies of the Colonial lords who segregated themselves into exclusive Clubs to which no Nigerian (or African) was considered fit for admission no matter his or her attainment in the academic or social field. In the early twenties in Lagos, the Europeans had formed an exclusive Tennis Club, situated at the present site of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

The objective of the Yoruba Tennis Club was to promote the spirit of brotherhood, fellowship and the healthy development of the mind and body, in a congenial social setting and through the playing of games especially that of Lawn Tennis, (which at that time was second in popularity to the game of football).

The Colonial Government allocated a piece of land 15, Old Golf Links, Onikan Lagos (later changed to 3, Onikan Road, Lagos) on which they built a Club House and two tennis courts. The first of the Tennis courts which was erected entirely from voluntary contributions in cash or in kind by members themselves, was informally opened on Wednesday, 15th December, 1926. The Tennis court was built then at a cost of Eighty Two Pounds, Eight Shillings and Two Pence (N164.82). The Club continued to hold its meetings and social activities at 75, Tokunboh Street, Lagos, the residence of Bro. Willie O. Fagbo until the first Club House was formally opened towards the latter part of 1936. Informal gatherings, especially after playing Tennis, were held under a tree in the Club’s premises.When the then Orelodun Club wanted to change to a more befitting name reflect their twin objectives of promoting brotherliness and the healthy development of mind and body, the following names were suggested: “Kinitalafia”, “Borokinni”, “Gbajumo”, “Yoruba”, “Saluga”, “Omoloju”, “Eko”, “Karaole”, “Oredun”. At its monthly general meeting held on Friday, 15th September 1926, the name “Yoruba Tennis Club” was unanimously adopted although it was never the intention of the founding fathers to restrict its membership to those of Yoruba origin alone. They ensured that the outlook and activities of the Club reflected its cosmopolitan nature.
