The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the renowned Lagos Polo Club on their last day in Nigeria.
On the final day of their visit to Nigeria, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, made a memorable appearance at the prestigious Lagos Polo Club. Founded in 1904, the Lagos Polo Club is one of Nigeria’s oldest and most esteemed social institutions, celebrated for its vibrant equestrian culture and high-profile polo tournaments.

The couple looked stunning, with Meghan donning a chic cream halter-style print dress by Johanna Ortiz, complemented by Burberry sandals and her signature Heidi Merrick “Santa Barbara” sunglasses. Prince Harry opted for a classic look, sporting a button-up shirt under a dark suit jacket paired with matching pants.
Upon their arrival, Harry and Meghan settled into their seats in the stands to enjoy a pre-game parade. The colorful procession featured children dressed in polo gear, proudly carrying Nigeria’s green and white flag, followed by older children on horseback.

The highlight of the day was a friendly polo match between two teams, aptly named “Duke” and “Duchess.” The match concluded with a score of 5-3 in favor of the Duchess’s team. Following the game, Meghan and Harry awarded medals to the players. Harry then delivered an impromptu speech, expressing his gratitude for the warm hospitality they had received at the club and throughout their stay in Nigeria.
Polo holds a special place in Harry’s heart, as he has a long history with the sport, often participating in charity matches and supporting various polo-related initiatives. Currently, he is working on a Netflix series that explores the world of polo, highlighting its rich history and cultural significance.

The reception at the Lagos Polo Club aimed to support Nigeria Unconquered, a charity dedicated to empowering wounded warriors through sports and rehabilitation programs. This event was particularly significant as Nigeria recently joined Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, an international adaptive sports tournament for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel.
The event served as a platform to raise awareness and funds for Nigeria’s athletes, showcasing the transformative impact of sports on their recovery and resilience. As a former captain in the British Armed Forces and the founding patron of the Invictus Games, Harry has long been a passionate advocate for veterans and their families.

In a poignant speech at a reception for military families in Abuja on May 11, Harry reflected on the sacrifices made by service personnel and their families. He acknowledged the “tragic loss of the brave souls” who have lost their lives in recent conflicts in Nigeria, offering his deepest condolences to their families. He emphasized the profound impact of conflict on children, families, and nations and highlighted the importance of uniting efforts to support the rehabilitation and recovery of military personnel and their loved ones.

“Let’s keep in mind that by uniting efforts, we could make remarkable progress in acknowledging the sacrifice of many of our military personnel and, as important, their families,” Harry stated. “Offering support for their rehabilitation and recovery is essential.”
The visit to the Lagos Polo Club was a fitting conclusion to Harry and Meghan’s tour of Nigeria, underscoring their commitment to supporting veterans, fostering international solidarity, and celebrating cultural heritage.
