Excitement fills the air at Ikoyi Club in Lagos today as the first-ever NNPC-SNEPCo Inter-School Swimming Competition kicks off. This landmark event, sponsored by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), brings together young swimmers from primary and secondary schools across Lagos for a thrilling showcase of talent.
A total of 274 students, aged 6 to 15, representing 20 schools, will compete in various swimming categories, including freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, and individual medley.
Ikedichi Kanu, Chairman of the Swimming Section at Ikoyi Club 1938, expressed the club’s excitement about hosting such a prestigious event. “For us, it’s about setting standards. The young participants will have an amazing time, and our members will enjoy a fun-filled Saturday. We’re always thrilled to host the future superstars of tomorrow,” he said.
Kanu also highlighted the club’s commitment to making the event memorable. “We’ve made all the arrangements to ensure the competition is glamorous for the kids and enjoyable for everyone involved. This is just the beginning. As we grow, we anticipate even more participants in future editions. We’ve also integrated modern elements into this year’s event—Saturday’s competition will be live-streamed on our social media platforms, and each of the 274 swimmers will receive a Swim Cloud account to track their performance and rankings.”
Akinbulejo Onabolu, Vice Chairman and Games Captain of the Swimming Section, echoed Kanu’s sentiments, calling this first edition a groundbreaking moment for young swimmers in Lagos. He also applauded NNPC-SNEPCo for their invaluable partnership with Ikoyi Club.
Today’s event not only celebrates the incredible talent of these young swimmers but also sets the stage for a brighter future in swimming. It’s more than just a competition—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of aquatic champions.
