The Acropolis Gardens and Residence Golf Course in Okija, Anambra, marked its grand opening with a successful inaugural tournament. The event drew 82 professional and amateur golfers from across Nigeria, showcasing the country’s rising golfing talent.Nigeria’s top-ranked golfer, Francis Epe from Ikoyi Club, stole the show.
Epe dominated the competition, setting a new course record with a remarkable 12 under par 60 score. This impressive feat cemented his position as Nigeria’s golfing champion.The tournament organizer, Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, expressed his vision for the event. He stated a desire to use the Acropolis Gardens and Residence Golf Course as a platform to reintroduce his hometown, Okija, to the global stage.
By hosting a classic golfing event, Azudialu-Obiejesi aims to shine a spotlight on the community’s rich heritage and potential.While Epe secured the top prize, other players displayed exceptional skill throughout the tournament. Gift Willy from Python Golf Club secured the runner-up position with a commendable eight under par 64 score. Following closely behind was Benin Golf Club’s Chukwudi Okoro, who finished third with a solid 67 score.The event also celebrated female golfing prowess. Nkechi Nwaokolo, a determined player with a 36 handicap, emerged victorious in the ladies’ category. Despite a gross score of 112, her impressive net score of 76 secured her the first-place title. Rita Izojie and Nkechi Musa-Tolani followed closely, claiming second and third place with net scores of 78 and 79 respectively.
The Acropolis Golf Course launch and its inaugural tournament enlarged the scope of the Nigerian golf.
