Adeyemo Alakija Emerges as Lagos Polo Club President, Promises Unity and Excellence

The Lagos Polo Club has ushered in a new era of leadership with the election of Mr. Adeyemo Alakija as its president during the club’s 2025 Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in Ikoyi, Lagos.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Alakija expressed deep gratitude to the club’s trustees, past presidents, members, staff, and management for their unwavering support. He emphasized a commitment to uphold the revered values and ethos of the prestigious club, assuring members of an administration rooted in transparency, humility, collaboration, and shared purpose. According to him, the true strength of the Lagos Polo Club lies in its collective unity and vision.

The newly elected president also presided over the formal inauguration of the 2025/2026 executive committee, which will steer the club’s affairs throughout the coming season. The new leadership team includes Mr. Tunji Ashiru as First Vice President and Mr. Kunle Tinubu as Second Vice President. Mr. Adeyemi Oreagba was elected as Honorary Secretary, while Mr. Olumide Soyombo takes on the role of Honorary Treasurer.

Other executive members include Mr. Mohammed S. Dangote as Polo Captain and Ms. Naomi Durosaro as Pony Welfare Member. The Grounds Member role goes to Mr. Yinka Alakija, with Mr. OluMayowa Ogunnusi serving as Stable and Surrounds Member, and Mr. Hakeem Adeniji-Adele as Bar Secretary. Also joining the committee are Mr. Olumbe Akinkugbe (Staff Welfare), Mr. Ade Dania (Catering), Mr. Tunde Aka-Bashorun (Social Secretary), and Mr. Fred Allison (Other Games Member).

Outgoing president, Mr. Bode Makanjuola, reflected with pride on the achievements of the 2024/2025 season. He described the past year as a period of exceptional growth, increased stability, and landmark milestones. He particularly celebrated the club’s emergence as continental champions and its grand celebrations marking 120 years of polo at the Lagos Polo Club and the Nigeria Polo Association’s centenary. Makanjuola also acknowledged the vital role of sponsors such as GT Bank, Veuve Clicquot, and Stanbic IBTC in supporting the League Cup.

In his brief address, newly elected Honorary Secretary Mr. Adeyemi Oreagba pledged to uphold the club’s cherished values and traditions. He stressed the importance of diligent, principled leadership, promising to work closely with the committee to preserve the club’s prestigious legacy.

With a fresh executive team now in place and a clear vision for the future, the Lagos Polo Club is poised to continue its legacy of excellence, unity, and elite sporting tradition.
