    • Bryanston Country Club, South Africa

The Bryanston Country Club started out with the Proclamation of the land and 301 acres being set aside for a golf course to be built in the township of Bryanston in 1940. Messrs Hedding, Alrridge and Bentwich came together in 1943 to start the discussions on how to proceed and at some point in their discussions the idea to not just build a Golf Course but to build a Country Club grew and an ad hoc committee was formed with a number of Bryanston residents.
At the end of 1948 the first official committee came into place and in 1951, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, the first president of the club opened the Club house and the first 9 holes, with Mrs. Irene Douglas driving in the first ball.

In August of 1953, a fire broke destroying the entire Club house. Rebuilding commenced in July of 1954 and completed in February 1955. In March of 1970 the Club opened the squash courts offering its members diverse sporting activities.

    • Durban Country Club, Durban

The iconic Durban Country Club was officially opened on 9 December 1922 and boasts a rich and proud history.

Towards the end of the First World War serious consideration was first given to the establishment of a Country Club in Durban. Country clubs were beginning to proliferate in other parts of South Africa and as Durban was already achieving a reputation as the leading seaside resort, it seemed imperative that such an amenity be attained – for residents and visitors alike.

The Durban Golf Club situated on a low-lying swamp at Greyville, with the race track running around it, was repeatedly subject to flooding, which often cancelled out all golf. A final straw was when floods made this course virtually unplayable for the 1920 South African Golf Championships and it was feared that Durban would not be asked to host the event again in 1924.

George Waterman accepted the challenge of building the course and was assisted in this endeavour by fellow professional golfer Laurie Waters – a four times winner of the South African Open. The difficulties these men faced were immense. All earth-moving had to be done manually. Giant sand dunes were flattened, dense bush and trees chopped down and carted away.

    • Eko Club

Eko Club was founded in 1974 and was formally launched in May 1975. The formation of the club was rooted in the early days of Eko as Lagos Island is often referred to.

The popular games around the time were either in-door or out-door such as Ogo, Ise, Ayo, Draught, Card Games. The formation of Boys’ Club in many areas of Lagos also assisted in bringing together youths in Lagos. The notable ones were Faji Boys’ Club, Alakoro Boys’ Club and Lafiaji Boys’ Club.

By the early 60s, Lagos had extended miles into the hinterland and many conurbations had developed within it. These included Apapa, Ajegunle, Surulere, Mushin, Shomolu, Ikeja, Ketu and Agege. This new trend made it difficult for these young men some of who now resided in these areas after their education or sojourn abroad, to meet as they used to do in their adolescent days. Most Nigerians (as well as the founding members) in these new areas of Lagos, worked on the Lagos Island, and faced unprecedented traffic-jam. Though most Members of Eko Club, at the early stage had their family houses on the Island, they still relied on the comfort provided by the Sewing workshop and Show-Room of Mr. Sikiru.A. Agoro, alias “Boy Liverpool” situated at 10, Bishop Street, (now Alhaji Issa Williams Street, Lagos). This served as the nerve-cooling centre for the founding members who would stop by to say hello to him. The shop soon became a meeting point of friends, sitting down and socializing till late evening. Saturdays were known to be most notorious for traffic-jams, so the number of callers at Alhaji Agoro’s shop were highest then. This mode of avoiding traffic-jam and invariably relaxing continued for a period, hence the need to purchase chairs, tables and glass cups became inevitable. Members decided to make a contribution of 2 pounds (Four Naira) per head for this purpose.

On one such occasion by the end of 1973, the idea was mooted that the group be properly organized and that a separate identity be given this group of young men. The idea received overwhelming support and a Club was born. Protem Officers were immediately chosen and Mr. Mutiu O. Bishogun became the Protem Chairman. The name Eko, was thereafter adopted after several considerations such as Lagos Elites Club, Lagos Social Club, House of Gentlemen etc.

At the first election of the officers in January 1975 at West End Coliseum, Mr Rasheed Alaba Williams emerged as the first President defeating the Protem Chairman, Justice Mutiu O. Bioshogun. Eko Club was formally launched at a Gala Dance held at the Lagos City Hall, on Saturday May 10, 1975, under the distinguished chairmanship of the late Chief Shafi L. Edu and the late Grand Patron, His Royal Highness, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II, Oba of Lagos.

    • Hong Kong Country Club, Hong Kong

The Club’s first General Committee held their inaugural meeting in April 1961 and the main Club building was opened on 29th January 1962. Since its inception, the Club has remained true to its original values. To this day membership of the Hong Kong Country Club remains truly cosmopolitan in character.

Before the Second World War to well into the 1960’s, membership of many Hong Kong social clubs was restricted to a particular racial or ethnic group. Against this backdrop, a group of Hong Kong residents began to formulate the idea of creating a social and family club with good amenities where residents of all nationalities and races could meet socially without fear of discrimination. Although many people played pivotal roles in the founding of the Club, the principal advocate of this group was Mr. J. R. Jones, a legal adviser to the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation who worked tirelessly from as early as 1947 to bring this idea to fruition.

    • Ibadan Recreation Club

The Ibadan Recreation Club (1902), formally called Ibadan European Club holds a Registration Certificate No. 40 of 1930. In the year 1950, the Ibadan European Club became the Ibadan Recreation Club. Later, in the year 2002, through an amendment to the constitution, the Ibadan Recreation Club became the Ibadan Recreation Club (1902).

The emergence of a recreation club was necessitated by a substantial British presence in Ibadan around 1893 when the Colonial Governor Carter was the Governor-General in Lagos.

That year, troops were stationed in Ibadan. After the British were satisfied that peace and order had been established, the first civic reforms were initiated in 1897 by the second Resident, who met regularly with the Chiefs’ Council. Minutes of council meetings were kept for the first time and licensing fees were instituted to provide small civic revenues and the first physical improvements were begun which somewhat unfortunately was a jail and new barracks for the Hausa units of the British Army stationed on the outskirts of Ibadan

The Ibadan European Club, which was in existence then, served only the British. The African Club later emerged to serve the Africans and another club to serve the Lebanese.

The Syrians and Lebanese led by R.S. Moukarin, who had been in Ibadan since 1926, with L. Bouari, the President of the Syrian Lebanese Union, applied for land to be used for the construction of their own recreation facility since they were not allowed into the European Club or the African Club. In July 1947, the union was granted a piece of Crown land on the outskirts of the city for their recreation club which gave birth to the Lebanese Club of Ibadan.

    • Ikoyi Club 1938

Ikoyi Club 1938 was established on September 29, 1938, through the merger of the European Club and Lagos Golf Club. The incorporation was entrusted to three nominated trustees namely: Sir Donald Kingdom, Henry Stewart, and David Duncan Gibb. The European Club was first located on the site of what was later known as the Ikoyi Hotel which was then Ikoyi Government Guest House, also known as the Catering Rest House. The Lagos Golf Club moved from 18, Race Course Road to the present location in 1927, and at one time occupied the land on which the old Federal Secretariat Ikoyi now stands. Long after the amalgamation of the European Club and the Lagos Golf Club, the Ikoyi Club 1938 remained essentially an “expatriates club” run by top European Civil Servants and members of the business communities. The Ikoyi Club 1938 has metamorphosed from its European only membership into one of the best examples of multiracial clubs in the world with membership drawn worldwide.

    • Lagos Country Club

Lagos Country Club was founded on August 3 1949. The original site of the Club was the hanger of the Royal Air Force by the West African Airways Corporation (WAAC) owned by Anglophone West African Countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and the Gambia. Upon independence of Nigeria in October 1960, WAAC was changed to Nigeria Airways. The Club was to soon move from its original site to a second site sharing its boundaries with the Grange School and John Holt Supermarket at the Air Traffic Section Wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport. The Club however moved to its present site covering over 5 acres on May 18, 1963.

The first Chairman of the Club was Mr. R. Simpson (a Briton) while the first Nigerian was a Medical Doctor, Dr. Williams. As at 1951, the membership strength of the Club was a modest range of between 75 and 100. With Snooker Billiards and Darts in the early 60s, the club has grown into 10 sporting sections today.

    • Lagos Motor Boat Club

The Lagos Motor Boat Club is a members only boat club founded on the 23rd of January, 1950. It is recognized as one of the most prestigious Clubs in Nigeria. As the Club looks forward to the future, it is important to remind ourselves of its origins. Like all social organizations, it has its ups and downs. The underlying culture of the Club and commitment to common sense from its members has enabled it not only to survive but to flourish when many other Clubs have faded away.
The Lagos Motor Boat Club was incorporated on 23rd January 1950, at Wilmott Point by a group of people breaking away from the Lagos Tarpon Club, which had been founded in 1938. The Tarpon Club was established for fishermen and the leisure boating activity grew over the years to the extent that the original objectives of the Tarpon Club were being compromised.
